How old do I have to be? All you need to be is 14 yrs of age and graduated from the eighth grade! We are located in Gresham, Oregon and are always looking for new members.
What exactly do you do? Everything from taking care of horses to mending fences on the 66 acre property we lease from Portland General Electric. We are not just about riding. We are about working too. So be prepared to do some labor, but don't worry, we always end with a ride! And our members are always so personable , it doesn't even seem like labor.
How do you make money to take care of 20 horses? We work concession stands at Mount Hood Community College. Mainly during football season but we also work the Highland games and various other events during the year. We really would be lost without the money we earn working concessions. Horses are very expensive!
How much horse experience do I need? Absolutely none. As new members, most of us had no experience with horses. We're city kids with limited opportunities for horse contact. Come on out, we love educating new members.
How much does this cost? Five dollars a month! Now that's a whole lot better than taking riding lessons!
How often do you meet? On Saturdays, at 9:00 a.m. all year round rain or shine. Also Mondays at a nearby church for business meetings. During the summer we have many rides during the week.
What does claiming a horse involve? You must earn the rank of Rider and maintain the percentage of hours to keep a claim on a horse. When your claimed horse is injured or needs extra care it is your responsibility to provide that care to maintain the claim. You will always have first dibs on that horse unless you are late for a work party or ride. Its like owning your own horse without the expense.
How do I earn the rank of rider? You come out with us and ride for a while. We will supply you with a Horsemanship Merit Badge book that will supply with the information you need to pass your test. When you feel comfortable with your skills on a horse, and your knowledge of horse care, you will take the test in the front of the book. We also require First Aid and CPR certification which we obtain as a group, or you can take a class at most fire stations. You must get these three things to be classified as a rider.
